  3. Ansel Adams Los Angeles
In 1940 Fortune Magazine commissioned Ansel Adams to photograph Los Angeles.  He took over 200 photographs of street scenes and everyday life. A handful of the images are on display at drkrm gallery in down town Los Angeles until the end of April.  Interesting to glimpse into the past and see how much the City of Angels has changed and how much is still recognizable. 8. Quilts of Gees Bend

Gees Bend is a rural community in Alabama founded in antebellum times. The women of Gees Bend have been quilting for at least 6 generations passing down there skills and aesthetic.

Using everyday fabrics, well worn clothing, cotton sheets, denim and corduroy the quilts are made with an inexact geometry and abstraction.

In the last 15 years the quilts have received well deserved international acclaim. The New York Times called the quilts “Some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced”

  9. "History’s really a remarkable thing if you’re not afraid of it. If you don’t know your history you are an empty vessel. But if you do, you’re pretty well equipped for most things. Each phase of history lays down it’s view of the world in its respective layer; each generation has to be able to do so.

But in order to do your layer well, you better know the other layers. There’s no such thing as a blank slate. To do it well, knowing the history of the medium is essential.”
